Trekking in the Dolomites Cortina, Italy

September 21 - 28, 2024

  • Day 1 - Arrive in Venice

As your flight arrives in Venice, you'll land at Venice Marco Polo Airport, the primary international gateway to the city.

We will access the city center and your hotel by boat or water taxi. Venice is unique because it has a canal network instead of roads, so water transportation is essential. Your boat transfer will take you through the iconic Venetian canals, giving you a first glimpse of Venice's historic architecture and picturesque scenery. It's a memorable and scenic journey.

After checking in and settling into your hotel, you'll have the rest of the day to explore Venice at your leisure. Stroll through the narrow streets and alleyways, visit famous landmarks like St. Mark's Basilica and the Rialto Bridge, and perhaps enjoy a meal at a traditional Venetian restaurant.

Tonight, our group will stay at the All’Angelo Art Hotel, San Marco, Venice.

  • Day 2 - Drive to Recoaro Terme and hike The Path of the Big Trees

This morning, we will depart Venice and drive to Recoaro Terme, a charming and historic spa town in the Veneto region of northern Italy. Nestled in the picturesque Lessini Mountains, Recoaro Terme is renowned for its natural thermal springs, lush greenery, and tranquil atmosphere.

Our first hike will be in the "little Dolomites" on the way to Recoaro: Il Sentiero dei Grandi Alberi. As you ascend gently, you'll catch glimpses of the surrounding mountains. The "Little Dolomites" are known for their rugged peaks and dramatic landscapes, and this hike offers you a taste of their beauty. The easy footing and manageable elevation gain make this hike a relaxing and enjoyable experience. It's an ideal "break-in" hike for hikers of all ages and fitness levels.

Overall, your first hike along Il Sentiero dei Grandi Alberi perfectly introduces the "Little Dolomites" and sets the stage for more adventurous explorations in the region. It's an opportunity to connect with nature, appreciate the local flora and fauna, and enjoy the tranquility of the mountains.

    Distance: About 8 miles round-trip

Elevation Gain: Approximately 300 meters (about 1000 feet)

Tonight, we will stay at Hotel Trettenero.

  • Day 3 - Cortina & Ra Stua Trail

Our second hike on the way to Cortina, specifically the Ra Stua trail with the option to visit the Cascate di Fanes, promises a fantastic outdoor adventure, offering distance and elevation gain flexibility. One of the significant aspects of this hike is its adaptability. You can customize the length of your hike to suit your energy and time constraints. You can turn back early for a shorter, more leisurely walk. You can extend your hike if you're up for a longer adventure.

You may hike between 2-10 miles, depending on when you want to turn back. For waterfall enthusiasts, the option to visit the Cascate di Fanes is a real treat. These waterfalls are not only stunning but also provide a refreshing and scenic spot to rest and enjoy nature. The cascading water adds to the overall charm of the hike.

Cortina d'Ampezzo, often referred to simply as Cortina, is a picturesque and internationally renowned resort town in northern Italy's Veneto region. Nestled in the heart of the Dolomite Mountains, Cortina is celebrated for its stunning alpine landscapes, outdoor recreational opportunities, and charming town center.

The awe-inspiring Dolomite mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounds Cortina. The jagged peaks, dramatic cliffs, and lush alpine meadows create a breathtaking backdrop for the town. The region has crystal-clear mountain lakes, including Lake Misurina and Lake Sorapiss.

Distance: 2-10 miles round-trip, depending on how far you want.

Elevation Gain: 300-1000 feet, depending on when you turn back.

We will stay in Cortina, at Ambra Cortina Luxury & Fashion Hotel, for three nights.

  • Day 4 - Lago di Sorapis Hike

Lago di Sorapis is renowned for its mesmerizing blue color, often described as "sapphire" or "turquoise." The lake's hue results from glacial minerals, and it's a sight to behold. As you approach the lake, the vibrant colors become increasingly apparent, creating a breathtaking view.

The trail leading to Lago di Sorapis takes you through various landscapes. You'll hike through dense forests, rocky terrain, and meadows. Along the way, you'll encounter stunning vistas of the surrounding Dolomite peaks.

As you ascend, you'll have opportunities to admire the majestic Dolomite Mountains from various viewpoints. With their dramatic shapes, these rugged peaks provide a remarkable backdrop for your hike.

You'll find World War I tunnels and trenches near the lake, adding a historical element to your hike. These remnants serve as a reminder of the area's past.

One of the highlights of this hike is the promise of enjoying pasta at the turnaround point. After reaching the stunning Lago di Sorapis, you can rest and savor a delicious Italian meal, refueling your return journey.

    Distance: Approximately 6 miles round-trip

    Elevation Gain: About 1000 feet

  • Day 5 - Laguzuoi

The hike of Lagazuoi is a remarkable alpine adventure that combines breathtaking ridge views, World War I historical sites, and the comfort of a charming Rifugio at the gondola station. This hike allows for a wide range of customization regarding distance and elevation gain, making it suitable for hikers of various skill levels.

The Lagazuoi Ridge hike offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Dolomite Mountains. As you hike along the ridge, you'll be treated to breathtaking vistas in all directions, including towering peaks, deep valleys, and picturesque alpine meadows.

The Lagazuoi area is rich in World War I history. You'll come across well-preserved trenches, tunnels, and fortifications that date back to the war. Exploring these sites provides a glimpse into the challenges faced by soldiers during that time.

The trail's adjustable distance and elevation gain suit casual hikers and those seeking a more challenging trek. You can tailor the hike to your fitness level and time constraints.

At the top of the hike, near the Lagazuoi Gondola station, you'll find a Rifugio (mountain hut) where you can rest and enjoy refreshments. This is a perfect spot to relax, soak in the views, and refuel for the return journey.

Distance: Approximately 2-10 miles round-trip (adjustable based on your preferences)

Elevation Gain: About 300-1000 feet, depending on the route and how far you choose to hike

  • Day 6 - Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo hike from Cortina is undoubtedly one of the Dolomites' most iconic and breathtaking hikes. This circular trail takes you around the towering peaks known as the "Three Chimneys" and offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Walking around the Tre Cime, you'll be treated to sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The Dolomite landscape is characterized by its rugged beauty, and this hike showcases it at its finest.

The area around the Tre Cime is rich in World War I history. You may encounter remnants of trenches and fortifications, providing insight into the region's wartime past.

One of the unique delights of this hike is the chance to enjoy delicious strudel at various mountain huts along the trail. Savoring a warm strudel while taking in the stunning scenery is a delightful experience.

Distance: Approximately 6.5 miles (around 10.5 kilometers)

Elevation Gain: About 1000 feet (around 300 meters)

Terrain: The trail is well-marked and relatively well-maintained, but some sections can be steep and rocky.

  • Day 7 - Exploring Venice

This morning, we will drive back to Venice for a final day of touring. This will allow you to explore the city's charming streets, historic landmarks, and unique culture at your own pace.

Remember to consult a map or use a navigation app to help you navigate Venice's winding streets. Also, watch the Vaporetto schedules if you plan to use them for transportation. Venice's beauty and charm are best appreciated by exploring on foot and taking in the unique atmosphere of this enchanting city.
