Walking Tour of Paris

May 20-27, 2023

Paris - The City of Lights

  • May 20 - Arrive in Paris

Schedule a departing flight from the US to fly overnight to CDG (Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport), where your group leaders will meet you at a designated location outside of baggage claim. All guests arriving on the selected arrival day will be met for a transfer to our hotel for the week.

We will check into our reserved rooms at Hôtel Le Lapin Blanc or Hotel des Grands Hommes.

  • Sunday, Day 1: Walk: Jardin du Luxembourg, The Pantheon, The Latin Quarter. Museum: L’Orangerie

We will begin our Paris Walking Tour in The Latin Quarter and Jardin du Luxembourg. The quaint Latin Quarter is home to the Sorbonne and student-filled cafes. It's also famed for its bookshops, including Shakespeare & Company (a must-see shop if you’re a Fitzgerald, Hemingway, or Gertrude Stein fan, and if you can get in! .). We’ll head down to the Jardin des Plantes and loop back up to Place de la Contrascarpe where you’ll see (the exterior!) of Hemingway’s home, where he spent a year with his wife and child (as told in A Moveable Feast).

The Jardin du Luxembourg is located in the 6th arrondissement. The creation of the garden began in 1612 when Marie de Medici, the widow of King Henry IV, constructed the Luxembourg Palace as her new residence. These days, Paris’ backyard is full of walkers, joggers, kids, artists, and model sailboaters out to enjoy the fresh air in a beautiful setting. We could spend the entire week there and still not see it all.

In the afternoon, we will visit The Musée de l'Orangerie, an art gallery of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings located in the west corner of the Tuileries Garden next to the Place de la Concorde.

  • Monday, Day 2: Ile de la Cite, Ile St. Louis, the Marais. Museum: The Army Museum and Napolean’s Tomb

In the middle of the Seine are two tiny islands: Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis. Highlights include Notre Dame Cathedral (still under renovation) and the exterior of St. Chapelle. But, if we play our cards right, we may also be there for a well-timed ice cream break at one of the top shops in the world- Berthillon.

A relatively new (in perspective) up-and-coming neighborhood in Paris is The Marais. Combining centuries of history, splendid architecture, high fashion, world-class museums, art galleries, and a fantastic restaurant scene, the former Jewish Quarter is now one of the hottest areas in the city.

We will visit The Army Museum and Napoleon’s Tomb in the afternoon. “Les Invalides” is a museum complex focused mainly on military history. The museum now contains the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte and an extensive collection of weapons and armor. It was initially built to house wounded and retired soldiers, hence its name.

  • Tuesday, Day 3: Giverny and lots of walking around the grounds. . . Performance: La Boheme

Today we will travel away from Paris to Giverny, where we'll explore Monet’s former home and gardens. You’ll be able to peek into his studio and stroll through the colorful gardens which inspired many of his paintings.

In the evening we will have an early dinner and attend , we will see La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini at The Bastille Opera House.

  • Wednesday, Day 4: Rue Lepic, Montmartre. Museum: Musee d’Orsay.

Today we’ll enjoy walking to Place de Clichy from Parc Monceau (a “sleeper” park, a real gem) and then head up to Montmartre via Rue Lepic (one of my favorite streets in Paris!) We’ll finish at Sacre Coeur Basilica and then catch a Metro back to our hotel.

In the afternoon, we will visit Musée d'Orsay. This beautiful museum, once a railroad station, now houses a beautifully presented, comprehensive Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art collection.

Evening: Church service at 1st church, 7:15 (optional)

    Jazz concert (Optional)

  • Thursday, Day 5: Free day and/or optional walk with Chuck and The Pompidou Center museum. Performance: Ballet at the Opera Garnier.

In the afternoon, we will visit Le Centre Pompidou, a 20th-century architectural marvel immediately recognizable by its exterior escalators and the enormous colored ventilation tubing. The “guts” of the building are on the outside to make more room for the art on the inside! It is home to the National Museum of Modern Art and is internationally renowned for its 20th and 21st-century art collections.

This evening, we’ll attend the Paris Opera Ballet. Being inside the Palais Garnier is an unforgettable experience… but add the dancers' incredible technique, overwhelming beauty, and artistry, and we’re in for a beautiful evening.

  • Friday, Day 6: Walk: Champs Elysees, The Trocadero and Tuilleries Gardens ending at the Louvre for our museum visit. Evening: Tour Eiffel tour and Dinner on the Seine.

We’ll walk along some of Paris’ most famous and recognizable avenues and parks this morning. We’ll start at La Trocadero, with a great view of the Eiffel Tower, and head over to the Arc de Triomphe. From there, we’ll walk down the Champs Elysees to the Obelisque at Place de la Concorde, where we’ll enter the Tuileries Garden, finishing at the Pyramid at the Louvre.

The Louvre is one of the world’s largest art museums. With priority access admission, we will head straight inside to see its crowd-pleasers, including Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa." Chuck will lead those of you who prefer a guide through some of the galleries, or you may prefer exploring the Louvre independently. Lunch is available in the museum cafes.

After we visit the Eiffel Tower, we will have a memorable final night with a gourmet 3-course dinner cruise on the Seine. Not everyone who visits can see Paris from the river, but we’ll be among the lucky ones. We‘ll have seen almost everything before, but it’ll all seem new... and your feet won’t get tired.
